Happy Friday!

Well only 2 weekends left until I take the bar, so I don't have much fun planned for this weekend. It will be mostly flash cards and practice essays. We are going to whip up the Oceanaire crab cakes again for a low key dinner tonight, and tomorrow we'll grab a quick dinner at Wood Spoon. I've never blogged about it, but it's a lovely little Brazilian place at the corner of 9th and Spring. Maybe I'll get a chance to share after taking the bar. I hope you've got something fun planned for the weekend!

PS: This was a shot I took when I was up in Yosemite earlier this summer. After the bar, I promise to tell you all about that too!

Happy Friday

Short weeks are nice. I was already able to clean the sheets and do some laundry over the holiday, so less cleaning to do this weekend! All I've got planned is some studying, some floor mopping, and maybe some time by the pool. What about you? If you don't have any plans, there are loads of a good movies out now, which is kind of surprisingly considering how blah past summers' fare has been. Ted and Brave are high on my list of movies to see. And I'm pretty intrigued by Magic Mike. (What heterosexual female wouldn't be?!) I also saw Moonrise Kingdom last weekend, which I highly recommend. It's adorable and fun. And if you are more in the mood for action movies, Savages, Prometheus, and the new Spiderman have actually gotten great reviews. So there's no excuse not to treat yourself to a movie and some popcorn this weekend!

Happy Friday!

Ah the weekend. Mostly it's a chance to catch on work I didn't do during the week, but this week is also prepped to be pretty delicious. As you can see, I baked linzer cookies, and they turned pretty good, which I am very proud of. In addition to munching on those this weekend, I was also able to pencil in 2 dates with the bf--something old and something new.

We're going to grab brunch at Bottega Louie on Sunday, which we haven't done in ages because it has just gotten too popular. But we've got a gift card that we've got to use, so hopefully we can get in before the crowds. Tonight, we're trying out the new French restaurant in downtown, Industriel. It's been getting rave reviews! I cannot believe when I moved to this neighborhood it was a Carls Jr. populated mostly by homeless men. Now it is the new chic, trendy spot! Downtown LA still has a long way to go (don't get me started on this subject), but stories like Industriel give me great hope for this neighborhood.

And on the subject of neighborhood updates, Towne, the other new French restaurant across the street from my building looks like it is on the verge of opening any day! If it opens this weekend, maybe I will have to go out for brunch on Saturday too . . . for blog research, you know. What are you doing this weekend?

Happy Friday!

How about a couple of cutie sea lions to start your weekend? I saw these guys on a whale watching cruise I took with my parents, which is what I wish I had lined up this weekend. Instead I will probably be studying at the new Starbucks that opened on the bottom floor of my building (so convenient!) and hopefully going to the mall to buy some summer sandals. I'm looking for something simple and clean like this. What do you have planned for the weekend?

PS: If you're in LA, the LA Film Festival is going on right now. I went last night and saw About Face, which is an HBO documentary about aging supermodels. It was surprisingly touching! I only wish the film maker held delved more deeply into the women's experiences with drugs, sexual abuse, racism, plastic surgery, and AIDS. Their stories were so interesting. I wanted to know more. The movie made me wish I could sit down with them all over a few bottles of wine and just listen to them talk for hours! Especially Jerry Hall. She was hysterical! It's playing again on Saturday, and for all non-LA residents, it will debut on HBO on June 30th. I highly recommend it!

Happy Friday (Where I Reminisce about my CA Road Trip)

Can you believe it? Yesterday was my last post about things I did on my spring break road trip. I thought I would never get around to sharing it all! Looking back it was a pretty packed trip. After starting the trip in LA with baked goods from Trails and burgers from Umamicatessen, we napped on the beach and ate seafood in Santa Barbara. We drank wine and ate Danish delicacies in Solvang. We took a wrong turn and stumbled on upon the beautifully secluded Surf Beach. We spent hours gawking at the opulence of the Hearst Castle's interior and exterior. We fell in love with the food and culture in San Luis Obispo. Then we fell in love with the wines at the near by Paso Robles vineyard, J. Lohr. We took a time out to enjoy nature at Big Sur State Park. Then we took in the sights at Monterey and Carmel by the Sea, including 17 Mile Drive. We stopped at the Winchester Mystery House on the way up to Berkely (I couldn't take pictures there, but see some sneaky phone photos here). We made an impromptu exploration of Oxbow Public Market, and we also stopped at like every vista point on the way up the coast. Whoa! I am tired just remembering it all. Good thing its the weekend. What are you up to? Have I inspired you to get out and explore this weekend?!

Happy (Home Decor) Friday!

Happy Friday! Indulge me for a moment, and start your 36 hours off with some suitcase table and bird-themed salt and pepper shakers!

This has been quite the week for home furnishings. I told you about Melrose Trading Post, revisited the Rose Bowl Flea Market, and shared about Marz. And now you finally get to see the end product of all these treasure hunts. What do you think?! I threw in some pictures of the peonies I bought too. Bloggers always seem to have peonies in their apartment, so when I saw them at the store for the first time this season, I thought I'd try them out for myself. Also, did you notice that Wizard of Oz book? It's a first edition! My parents got it for me for graduation from this amazing store that we discovered together on a family outing. I love it because it is such a unique gift that truly shows how well they know me (I love vintage books) and how much they thought about their present. This is something I will always treasure!

So aside from decorating an apartment I'm going to move out of at the end of the summer, this weekend I'm mostly planning on studying and seeing the new Snow White movie. What are you up to?!

Happy Friday!

A glass of wine at Sunstone Vineyard & Winery in Santa Ynez over graduation weekend.

Life is finally back to normal over here: Studying for the bar during the day, hanging out with the bf and the kitty at night. Is it sad that this feels like a vacation compared to my actual vacations? Probably the same thing that drives me to be work hard in school, drives me to pack my vacations full of activities. Otherwise I feel like I could have done more and seen more. But then I wind up coming home more exhausted then when I left! Does anyone else do this? After 3 days of doing nothing last weekend and a short week that got me back into my study schedule, I feel like I can go into this weekend recharged. Tonight I'm excited for a girls' night! I'm going to get a mojito at Cana with a friend and then go to a birthday dinner afterwards. Saturday will be probably be reserved for more studying, but Sunday I'm determined to check out the Melrose Trading Post! I'm still on the hunt for vintage suitcases. What do you have planned for the weekend?

Happy Friday!

A shot of my toes enjoying the rose gardens by the Santa Barbara mission.

Happy Friday indeed! I'm ready for the weekend. After going straight from finals, to graduation, to Santa Barbara, to studying for the bar, I've decided to take today to just calmly hang out by myself. I'm going to catch up on my papers, watch the season finale of Gossip Girl that I missed, and sort through the hundreds of photos I took over graduation weekend. On Monday I'm off again on another trip (Yosemite!), so I'm going to make sure to enjoy a leisurely weekend. What do you all have planned? Anything fun?

Happy Friday!

Just a sampling of what's been added to the Recipes and Reviews pages!

Happy Friday friends! There is so much exciting stuff going on, I almost don't know where to start!

First, I've gotten around to a lot of blog maintenance while procrastinating on my studying. I made two new pages recently. One for recipes and one for trends. My goal is to make these two topics into regular series. I also went back into the archives and added all of my recent restaurant posts to the reviews page, so check that out too! There are some good meals worth revisiting.

Also, it's officially ONE WEEK until I graduate! It's hard to believe that law school is over. (Almost. Damn you Trademark exam that was scheduled the day before graduation!) I remember my first year so clearly. I never slept. I was stressed to the point of constant tears. I felt like that year would never end. And now it feels like that was a life time ago. But I've still got 1.5 more finals to go, so I'll have to hold off on my serious reflecting for right now. Everyone is arriving on Wednesday and Thursday, so I'll be spending this weekend prepping for my guests! That means fresh flowers, homemade baked goods, and a deep apartment cleaning are all on my to do list.

Also on my to do list this weekend is the Melrose Trading Post! My new flea market partner-in-crime loves this market and suggested I check it out with her. I've never been, but I'm very excited. I'm on the hunt for reasonably priced vintage suitcases. (It's shocking how much people try to charge for old suitcases. I know they're trendy, but really?) I'm want to use them as a side table like this. I was so successful at the Rose Bowl flea with finding my rollaway bar, so keep your fingers crossed I'll have equally good luck here!

Well enough about me! What are you up to this weekend?!

UPDATE: I totally didn't realize tomorrow was Cinquo de Mayo. Will you be celebrating? I think I'm going to have to add fish tacos and tequila sunrises to my weekend plans!

Happy Friday!

This is what I've got lined up this Friday. Study study study. Quick break to peruse Pinterest. Study study study. Quick break to peruse some personal style blogs. Study study study. Repeat on Saturday. Repeat on Sunday. I've got my first exam on Monday and my second on Wednesday, but after this intense burst of studying, I'm in the home stretch! One more in-class exam and one take home. And while I'm working on those, my family and best friend will be arriving! Sooo close to gradution . . .

PS: I hope your weekend sounds a lot more fun!

Happy Friday!

The weekend is almost here! Tonight the bf is escorting me to the 3L gala, which will be my last law school party. Over 2/3rds of my class is coming, and I'm grabbing dinner before the event with some of my friends at a restaurant I've been wanting to try for ages. Needless to say, I couldn't be more excited about tonight! Then the rest of the weekend will be spent prepping for finals. My first one is in 10 days. Yikes! I can't believe next week will be my last law school classes. I'm ready to graduate, but I know I will starting missing my school days sooner than I realize.

If you're looking for something to do this weekend, there's an amazing book festival going on at USC on Saturday and Sunday. I doubt I'll have time this year, but I went last year and was both overwhelmed and excited about all of the different kinds of writing people still do. Sometimes it feels like the literary world is made up of just Lisbeth Salander and Harry Potter and celebrity memoirs. But this festival really shows you that there's so much more. It made me excited to try new authors, instead of just reading books that had been turned into movies or TV shows.

Well wish me luck in my heels tonight, and have a great weekend!

Happy Friday!

It's back and forth between drizzles and downpours today, but if there is one thing living in LA has taught me to appreciate, it's a nice rainy day. I used to hate the rain when I lived in DC because it meant canceled events and a packed metro. But rain in LA means all of the plants are full of life and the chance of wildfires is low. My plans for this weekend are to work work work on Saturday. Then I can hopefully spend all of Sunday reading the NY Times, making some of these, and watching the bf's and my Sunday night shows (Mad Men, The Killing, and Game of Thrones). If there's time maybe I'll get to work on my new bar too! What do you have planned for this weekend? I hope it's lots of relaxation and fun!

Happy (Easter) Friday!

Ok, this is not the Easter Bunny. But this little guy's still cute!

Happy Friday! Do you all have any big plans for this Easter weekend? I'm off to take some pictures for my final photography project today. And then the bf and I are trying the new Italian restaurant (Il Mare) down the street for dinner. Reviews have been mixed, but I like to give the neighborhood businesses at least one visit to see for myself. Hopefully it doesn't turn out like my City Billy experience! Then on Sunday I am going to the Rose Bowl flea market for the first time! I'm super excited. It sounds like the flea market to end all flea markets. If I'm not all flea-ed out, maybe the bf and I will dye some eggs that night. Some of ours came out pretty well last year.

Happy Friday!

Happy Friday! This is a look back on one of the driving parts of my California road trip. This was the scenery from Santa Barbara to San Luis Obispo, including a brief detour at Surf Beach. Admittedly, it was a total accident that my friend and I ended up at Surf Beach. We were supposed to turn in some town to continue up Rt. 1, but we were too busy looking for a bathroom. We forgot to check our directions and continued going straight on the road we were on, which dead ended at Surf Beach. The beach, with its natural flora, small dunes, and almost-complete seclusion, was an amazing find! Although it was freezing, we got out of the car and explored a bit. I think the most adorable thing about this beach has to be the fact that it has its own tiny Amtrak station. On a warmer day, it would be quite an adventure to take the train up there and make a day of it!

I hope you have fun plans for the weekend! Last weekend, the only "H" I didn't accomplish was homework, so that I was I plan on doing most of this weekend. But even if it is no a fun weekend, hopefully it will be a productive one! See you on Monday!

Happy (Triple H) Friday!

It's Friday! Yay! I've got to go in to the photo lab to develop a few more prints this morning. My documentary project is due on Monday, so I need to finish that up. I will of course share it once its finished. After that, though, I plan to spend the rest of my weekend tackling the 3 H's: hiking, homework, and Hunger Games! It's been raining in LA, so Griffith Park should be at its ultimate greenness right now. After a long hike, I'm planning on stopping at The Trails (pictured above) which is just about the world's most adorable cafe and happens to be located inside the park. I recently discovered they have killer baked goods, and I'm dying to try a slice of pie. I can use my pie-eating time to start reading Hunger Games, which I want to finish before seeing the movie, though I hear that is not so hard. My friend read the book in 1 day! Then Sunday is supposed to be rainy, so I'm determined to finally catch up on some law school work. I've got to make sure I don't fail my last semester! What do you have planned this weekend? Will you being seeing Hunger Games, enjoying the outdoors, or maybe both?

Happy (Photographic) Friday!

I usually keep Search for J Street pretty lighted hearted. A gushing food review here, a little self deprecating humor there, and a splash of pretty landscapes or shoe pictures just to keep things interesting. But I've been thinking about sharing something a little more personal. As you know, I had to do a project centered around portraits for my photography class. The inspiration from my project ended up coming from my grandmother's funeral, which I attended right before I began working on the project. I've attached the explanation of the photos below, but (if I may) I would encourage you to look at the photos for a few minutes before reading the explanation. (Also, the explanation is not a quick read, so it maybe more fun to just consider the photos if you are short on time!)

~
 ~

My portrait project began as a response to one of the class readings. There was a very small section in the article "Investigations of a Dog" where the author described photographer Daido Moriyama's perspective on photographyit is just not able capture the world. At the time, I had recently returned from my grandmother's funeral, and this idea of photography not being able to convey what is in the real world struck a chord.
At the funeral home before the mass and at the reception afterward, a slideshow played. It was filled with photos of various family members with my grandmother at holidays, at graduations, on summer vacations, etc. There were even a few staged portraits of my grandmother as a small child in the 1920s and at her graduation in the 1940s. But the eulogy that my uncle gave at the mass did not mention a single one of these moments captured on film. And my conversations with my mother and other relatives after the mass did not mention any of these moments either. I was struck by the fact that the things everyone remembered about my grandmother were not the things anyone took pictures of. My mother talked about how, contrary to those staged portraits, my grandmother's father was sometimes angry and drunk. My grandmother's mother would sneak into my grandmother's bedroom, lock the door, and sleep beside her daughter to hide. My uncle talked about how my grandmother almost single-handedly cared for her son John when he died of brain cancer while still raising her other children that were still living at home. But I have never seen photographs from when my uncle John was dying. My aunt talked about her worry that my grandmother might have died believing that her children loved their father more because he was the one who would always make the grand gesture (that the family could not afford) and she was the one who would have to impose cutbacks in response. That instantly reminded me of another story: One morning she found several brand new cars in the driveway. My grandfather had bought them the night before while intoxicated. My grandmother woke him up from his hangover, marched him and the car back to the dealership, and shamed the salesman into rescinding the sale. There are, somewhat understandably, no pictures of that moment either.  But I treasure all of these stories about my grandmother. To me, they communicate her strength, and they make her sweet disposition all the more impressive. I don't think I could be the same good listener and loving person she was after living through some of those experiences. And I wish someone had captured even one portrait of my grandmother in one of these defining moments.
As a result of my experience at my grandmother's funeral, my idea for my portrait project is based on the dichotomy between the pictures we take of and the things we remember about our loved ones. As my grandmother made me realize, those two categories seem to rarely overlap. I then set out to photograph the defining but untold experiences in other's lives. At the start of my project, I asked my friends to think back on their lives and guess at what their loved ones might remember about them. I wanted to try to recreate those experiences with environments, clothing, or objects, but I found that I could not communicate my vision to them. I could not elicit something other than traditional memories that many people have with a loved one, to those memories which were unique to and defining for them.
In the end, I chose to be my own model. I chose three un-photographed experiences from my life that I thought, when trying to remember me and describe who I was, friends and family might look back upon. I chose a family holiday party from when I was nine. At that party, my cousin whispered to me that our uncle was gay. To anyone even a few years older than me, this would have seemed a silly revelation since my uncle had been bringing my "other uncle" with him to family events my whole life. But at nine, I had only heard the people use the word "gay" without really understanding what it meant. When I could finally associate the word with a real life relationship, it forever defined what I thought gay was. To me, it became just another piece of my mother's large, crazy side of the family, no more or less odd than any of the other relationships in the family. The second memory I chose was from when I was twenty. Matt, a good friend of mine, was killed. None of my group of friends nor I had ever suspected, but his father was seriously mentally ill. And then one day his father broke and shot the whole family before killing himself. My friends and I were all so young, too young to understand how such a bad thing could happen. The experience both bonded us and at the same time made all realize how fleeting those bonds can be. The final experience I chose was my break up with the first boyfriend that I loved, which happened just a few years later. He was a terrible boyfriend, and I was an idiot for dating him. But like lots of people in their early 20s, that did not stop me from sticking around and being hurt and disappointed over and over again. The break up was a very painful moment, but in retrospect is was also a moment I am very proud of. A few friends and my mom had been encouraging me for months to demand better, and at some point, I was finally able realize that they were right. I would be better off alone.
In sequencing the photographs in each series to tell the story of that experience, I tried to reflect my emotion response to the experience at the time. When I was nine, I remember distinctly feeling confusion, disbelief, and then a sort of silly awkwardness, as if I had invaded someone's private world, when I came to realize my Uncle Teddy was gay and my Uncle Aaron was his partner. So I ordered the photographs in a way that I thought corresponded to the confusion-disbelief-embarrassment development. When I was twenty, I remember feeling completely surrounded by a community of mourners when my friend and his family were killed, but the community faded. Sometimes I wonder if even my closest friends still think about Matt or if have pushed his short life from their minds. Sometimes I fear I have pushed him from my mind too. So I ordered this series with the camera moving away from a sole mourner and then removed the mourner too. And when I was in my early twenty’s, I remember calling that boyfriend completely heartbroken (or so I thought) because I was sure we were made for each other. But then his nonchalant reply to the ending of our relationship (he had clearly moved on long before) was when I felt truly inconsolable. It was so much more painful and disorienting to realize that the decision to break up was not, in fact, mine; he had just been waiting for me to formalize it. So I ordered the photographs with the animated portraits first and then the out of focus portrait last to try and represent that final blow.

Happy Friday!

Geez it feels like ages since I've managed a Happy Friday post. Have you missed them? I kind of have. So what are you all up to this weekend? We're transitioning from our portrait project to our documentary project in photography class. I have zero clue what I want the subject of my documentary project to be, but I need to shoot at least a roll or two this weekend. Suggestions of subjects are welcome! My other plans are to celebrate a belated Valentines Day, try to fit in a hike, and maybe see A Separation at the little theater in Los Feliz. The reviews are outstanding, and the theater is a fun place to see a movie. It is so adorably small! I hope you have a fun weekend planned as well!

PS: If you don't have any plans this weekend, Downton Abby's first season just appeared on Netflix. Watch!
